What is the natural role of immersive online environments in education? At present, over 200 colleges and universities and many schools and school districts are searching for answers -- over 150 in Second Life alone, the remainder on diverse other platforms such as Sun Wonderland, OpenSim, OpenCroquet and others.
What is the likely future for these and other present-day educational applications? What classes of application align well with the capabilities of today's platforms, and the nature of virtual world experience? What criteria do we use to measure success?
